The Central Australian Linguistics Circle recently hosted a talk by linguistic prehistorian Paul Heggarty from the University of Cambridge. The talk was entitled Language, Genes and Archaeology, and Paul presented a view of language prehistory that sees patterns of language diversity and expansion as being linguistic effects of forces that shape human societies over time – eg. population movements, military takeovers, new technologies and so on.
