TWO new classroom blocks and a state-of-the-art language centre were among $7.8million worth of new facilities officially unveiled at Riverview’s St Peter Claver College on Thursday.

The project, which came courtesy of $7.2 million from the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution program, included a technology block and computer and science labs, an extended and refurbished administration office, and an amenities building.

The classroom blocks comprise 12 new classrooms and two computer labs.

School principal Diarmuid O’Riordan said the two-year construction of the project was well worth the wait.

``To have facilities is what’s essential to be given these learning enhancement opportunities. The fact that we have had these two massive classroom buildings constructed (is vital),’’ he said.

``Previously the students were in demountable buildings. The students’ self esteem is lifted because they are in these environments that are well equipped.

``There’s a sense of pride that comes with that.’‘

Mr O’Riordan said the language centre could prove to be one of the most important additions to the college in its 35-year history.

``We offer Japanese and Vietnamese but we’re looking at doing Aboriginal language and possibly Chinese,’’ he said.

``We’ll also be doing film and television studies.’’
