LAVERTON residents and Hobsons Bay councillors have decided a community hub by any other name just wouldn't be as sweet.

After calling for community suggestions last July to name the $8 million hub, councillors last month voted in its official title, Laverton Community Hub.

The council's community services director Peter Hunt said 23 suggestions received from the community were assessed, and the most commonly preferred name was the Laverton Community Hub.

Other names to be shortlisted were Laverton Hub, Laverton Uwan Centre (an indigenous word meaning meeting place) and Laverton Yani Centre (an indigenous word meaning peace).

"However, advice from the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages revealed uwan and yani were not words from the Boon Wurrung language and it would be inappropriate for them to be used in Boon Wurrung traditional country," Mr Hunt said.

Calls for a fresh name for the hub were made by Laverton residents in a consultation survey in 2009 that received 41 responses.

Mr Hunt said consultation on the name was held because community input was important for a sense of ownership and inclusiveness.

The hub, currently being built, will house services including a community centre, neighbourhood house and a seniors club and is expected to open early 2013.
